The Dark Patterns We Still See Everywhere (And How to Avoid Them)

Dark patterns are UX designs that trick users into doing things they didn't intend to. They're everywhere, they erode trust, and most of them are completely avoidable. **The worst offenders:** **1. Roach Motel** — Easy to sign up, impossible to cancel. The classic. If your cancellation flow has 6 steps and your signup has 1, you have a dark pattern. **2. Confirmshaming** — "No thanks, I don't want to save money." Making the decline option feel personally embarrassing is manipulative, full stop. **3. Hidden costs** — Showing a price, then adding fees at checkout. This drives cart abandonment through the roof AND destroys trust. **4. Privacy Zuckering** — Making privacy settings so complicated that most people just give up and accept everything. Named after a specific person for obvious reasons. **5. Trick questions** — Pre-checked boxes for email lists, using double negatives in consent forms. **Why this matters beyond ethics:** EU's GDPR and Digital Services Act are actively targeting dark patterns. The fines are real (€20M or 4% of global turnover, whichever is higher). **The alternative:** Honest design builds longer-term trust. Users who choose to be with you — rather than being tricked — stay longer and refer more. Design as if your users are intelligent adults. They are.
